What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is not straight, said Dr. David Gordon, an orthopedic surgeon at Essentia Health who specializes in pediatrics.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is not straight, said Dr. David Gordon, an orthopedic surgeon at Essentia Health who specializes in pediatrics.

It features either an S-shaped or a C-shaped curve to the side, and is most obvious when looking at someone from the back, he said. It’s a three-dimensional deformity that also includes a backward rotation in the spine.

More than 80 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown, Gordon said.

It can be diagnosed in children, in adolescents and in adults, he said. Among adolescents, it is six to seven times more common in girls than in boys.

Most cases are not severe and are kept under observation. Bracing is still used in some cases with growing children, but the value of braces is being reconsidered in the field, Gordon said. Surgery is required in extreme cases.

Bonnie Ambrosi, a certified instructor in yoga for scoliosis, said common signs of scoliosis are:

  • One shoulder is higher than the other.

  • One hip is higher than the other.

  • One foot always turns out to one side.
