Duluth march, ceremony
The annual Veterans Day March begins at the Depot at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, goes to Superior Street and east to Lake Avenue, then to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
The Veterans Day ceremony will be in Symphony Hall and will include a tribute to veterans and military families. Nick Ostapenko will speak at the event.
The Duluth Transit Authority will shuttle veterans from the DECC to the Depot at 9:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Artwork honoring veterans
Veterans’ Memorial Hall at the St. Louis County Historical Society is hosting a display of artwork that honors veteran through Wednesday. The exhibit is free on Sunday.
The pieces show the history and contributions of military men and women.
Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. on Friday.
Superior
In remembrance of Veterans Day, the Superior Elks Lodge, 1503 Belknap St., will host a Veterans Day dinner on Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m. The dinner is free for all veterans and their significant others. For those who are not veterans the cost is $8. Call (715) 394-7403 to reserve a spot.
Silver Bay
The Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay, 45 Banks Boulevard, will have a program Sunday for residents and the community to honor veterans. Wayne Johnson will address the audience gathered in the Veterans Home’s great room at 3 p.m.
Johnson is a World War II veteran who joined the Army Air Corp on Dec. 8, 1941, at age 20. He was chosen as one of the Flying Tigers and flew P40 War Hawks and P51 Mustangs in combat, according to his biography. He is the author of a four-volume history, “Chennault’s Flying Tigers,” and was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnson was the city attorney in Beaver Bay and Silver Bay for more than 50 years.
The public is welcome to attend Johnson’s presentation.
Spooner
The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs will host a Veterans Day ceremony Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, three miles south of Spooner. The theme for this year is “The Year of the Veteran.” The cemetery is just off Highway 53 at N4063 Veterans Way.
Two Harbors
The Two Harbors American Legion will be the site of a gathering for veterans and their spouses for a short program and a roast beef and roast pork dinner on Sunday. Tickets are being sold and the Legion will be closed to the public for the event.

Bong documentary
Wisconsin Public Radio plans a Veterans Day broadcast of a two-hour documentary on World War II flying ace Maj. Richard Bong at 3 p.m. Sunday on 91.3 KUWS in Superior and 90.9 in Ashland.
“Forever Ace: The Richard Bong Story” compiles 10 years of interviews by WPR Superior bureau reporter Mike Simonson and his WPR colleagues. It is narrated by Jim Packard, who completed the project before he died in June 2012.
Bong’s wingman, tent mate and crew chief during his service in the South Pacific are interviewed, as are friends and members of his family. In addition, historians from the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Australian War Museum talk about the significance of the time Bong served in World War II and the legacy he leaves.
The program includes popular Big Band music from World War II and vintage audio clips of Bong when he was on stateside leave. Many of the veterans featured in “Forever Ace” were interviewed after visiting the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior.
Bong shot down more enemy aircraft than any other American pilot during the war. In fact, his record of 40 kills has never been equaled by an American pilot in combat.
