Sophie K. Gronski, 101, a recent Duluth resident and also a longtime resident of Superior, Wis. on Susquehanna Avenue, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

Sophie K. Gronski, 101, a recent Duluth resident and also a longtime resident of Superior, Wis., on Susquehanna Avenue, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

She was born on May 9, 1911 in Split Rock, Minn., to Stanley and Katherine (Michalski) Kulas.

Sophie was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and was an Auxiliary member of the Polish Club.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. For as long as she was able to, she loved reading, doing crossword puzzles and knitting for her family. Sophie also traveled once to Hawaii, and once had a five country tour of Europe.

She is preceded in death by her father Stanley; birth mother Katherine; and her step-mother Josephine Kulas; her husband Anthony Gronski in 1986; her son Robert Gronski in 2011; and eight brothers and two sisters.

Sophie is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Wendlick, Milwaukee, Wis., and Linda (John) Bradley, Duluth; one son, Gerald Gronski, Superior, Wis.; 18 grandchildren, 24 and one half great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 in the Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior with a Scripture service to be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 and continue until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Andrew Ricci as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Pallbearers for the service will be Sophie’s grandsons, Michael, Richard and Steven Wendlick, Robert, John and Jeremy Gronski and Jeff and John “JR” Bradley.
