Deer hunters may donate deer to the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank during this fall’s firearms deer hunt. The state of Minnesota will cover the processing fees of all deer donated.

Hunters willing to donate their harvest should bring their tagged and field-dressed deer with hide intact to state-registered processor Gamache and Sons Custom Meat Processing, 10 Farmstead Road in Esko. Gamache and Sons will receive a $70 reimbursement from the state to process the meat. Once processed, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank will pick up and distribute the donation to Northland food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters and people in need.

Already this year, 497 pounds of venison have been donated during the city of Duluth’s bow hunt. The donations have provided 398 meals to Northland residents in need.
