He graduated from Washburn High School in 1944 and continued his education at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in science. He was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church and participated in many activities there and was the emcee at many programs at the church. Richard was a Sunday school teacher for many years and also served on the church council. He was an active member of NARF, AARP, the Alumni Association for the University of Minnesota, MUI, the Farmers Market, and the Hermantown Historical Society, to name a few.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Lillian Herman; his aunt, Edna Nyquist; brother-in-law Gerald Spandl; and his son-in-law, Allen Herrick.
Richard is survived by JoAnne and their children, David (Carla) Herman of Hermantown, Donna (Mark) Mueller of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Paula Herrick-Parks of Duluth, Bradley (April) Herman of Duluth, and Susan (Paul Kaiser) Herman of Sedona, Ariz.; sister Catherine Spandl of Mesa, Aria.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
