Reader’s view: Commissioners stood up for human right to marry

The writer of the Oct. 1 letter, “Jewell has no right to speak for others on amendment,” about the St. Louis County Board’s resolution to oppose Minnesota’s marriage amendment, asked about Commissioner Frank Jewell, “What was he thinking?”

I believe the four commissioners who voted to pass this resolution opposing the amendment were thinking the majority should not be voting on the rights of the minority. But since that is what we are tasked with here in Minnesota, those commissioners seem to believe the ability to be married is a fundamental human right that should be afforded to all. They also seem to feel it is their duty as elected officials to stand up for the thousands of people they represent whose rights will be constitutionally prohibited.

We are not given the power to vote on another’s civil rights, for obvious reasons. If you are one who does not believe this to be a civil right, that may explain your objection.
