  • A federal team assigned to find ways to beef up the Duluth-Superior economy began a three-day visit to the area yesterday. The group was sent because of the negative impact to local industry caused by Duluth Air Base cutbacks.

  • Proctor voters yesterday turned down a $1.875 million school bond issue by a vote of 1,289 to 888. The issue — to finance additions to the junior and senior high school buildings — was sought to alleviate crowded conditions and eliminate split scheduling.

  • The new Fond du Lac Community College building in Cloquet will be dedicated in a public ceremony tomorrow. Established in 1987 with 82 students, the college originally held classes in five renovated rooms at the old Garfield Elementary School in Cloquet.

  • The Superior City Council tomorrow will begin reviewing a preliminary budget that would raise city property taxes almost 25 percent next year. That means the owner of a $50,000 home would pay an additional $140 in property taxes.
