Most high school students have had to deal with overwhelming amounts of stress, whether from a big exam the next day, balancing a job with family and social life, extra activities, or a combination of these. It can often be very challenging to keep a positive attitude and not spin out of control at times. When these kinds of feelings occur, there are certain easy, natural ways to help the level of stress settle down.

The most important, and often most challenging change a student can make is to his / her diet. Consistent stress can actually lead to the loss of a surprising amount of essential vitamins, such as Vitamins B and C, magnesium, potassium, iron and calcium, to name a few. Changing a diet to include more of these vitamins will be beneficial. Some good foods for this are leafy vegetables, broccoli and cauliflower. Eating a good breakfast can also help you to manage stress. Fish and fish oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce stress response. Avoiding processed food is another way to promote a healthy diet. Certain kinds of herbal tea can be good too. Packing your own lunch can give you the option to control what you eat. If done properly, it ensures that you get foods with more vitamins and nutrients, and less processed food with excess fats and carbs. Having a healthy diet will give you more energy and help you maintain a more positive outlook.

Exercising is also a great way to relieve stress. Being in sports or even a weekly kickboxing or yoga class can be very valuable. Exercise and physical activity boosts endorphins (brain neurotransmitters), making you feel good. Even with the extra curricular activities, one of the most important ways to keep anxiety down is to always devote some time just for you. Time to wind down and relax is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Listening to music and keeping a clear mind, even if only for a little while, will help to keep a level head and a positive mindset. Students face a huge amount of stress due to being overbooked, exhausted, trying to take on too much, or any number of other factors.

Taking time to keep stress in check is one of the wisest things you can do.
