It was all great, but it appears the sweet stuff edged out the spicy in the News Tribune’s annual recipe contest Thursday at Johnson Mertz Appliance.
It was all great, but it appears the sweet stuff edged out the spicy in the News Tribune’s annual recipe contest Thursday at Johnson Mertz Appliance.
First place in the appetizer-and-dessert themed contest went to an ice cream recipe, and the People’s Choice award went to a torte. Second, third and fourth prizes involved curry, salt and salsa.
Here are the prize winners, their recipes and their prizes:
First place ($500 gift certificate to the Food Service Marketplace): Elizabeth Daly, Duluth, Apple Ice Cream.
People’s choice (microwave oven from Johnson Mertz): Susan Stahl,
Duluth, Lemon Schaum Torte.
Second place ($300 gift certificate to the Blue Heron Trading Co.): Kerry Wedin, Duluth, Curried Chicken Cream Puffs.
Third place ($150 gift certificate to Dunbar’s Supply): llison Olson, Two Harbors, Salted Caramel Brownies.
Fourth place (Weber grill from the News Tribune): Teresa Gilchrist, Cloquet, Watermelon Salsa.
Almost 300 recipes were submitted this year. Other top 10 finalists were Luanne Borowicz, Duluth, Beer Cheese Fondue; Margaret Smith, Superior, Chinese Appetizer Meatballs; Pauline Nuhring, Duluth, Chicken Fajita Nachos; Lisa Lepak, Superior, Impossible Pumpkin Pie Cupcakes; Gail Lundgren, Moose Lake, Rhubarb Cream Delight.
Judges were Dustin Tomasetti from the Pickwick Restaurant and Pub, Mark Edwards from the Exchange Deli Bakery & Catering Services, Renee Kessler of Three Sisters Catering and Lane Prekker of Chow Haul Mobile Restaurant.
