Other Northland projects will receive Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants, the Minnesota Historical Society announced Wednesday.
The grants are funded by the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, which supports efforts to preserve Minnesota’s land, water and legacy, including state history and cultural heritage. The fund’s money comes from a sales tax increase of three-eighths of one percent that voters approved in 2008.
Other grants in area counties include:
St. Louis County
The St. Louis County Historical Society will receive $150,000 to fabricate and install an exhibit of Eastman Johnson art work and Ojibwe artifacts in the Duluth Union Depot, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Minnesota Discovery Center will receive $85,900 to finalize, fabricate and install the Ojibwe exhibit segment in the “People” permanent exhibit. The center also will receive a $7,000 grant to make primary records available through a new microfilm reader. The Tweed Museum of Art will receive $80,981 to preserve and make accessible a collection documenting the history of the Duluth region. The Friends of B’nai Abraham Synagogue will receive $28,760 to mitigate moisture damage to the rear egress of the B’nai Abraham Synagogue, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum will receive $14,780 to stabilize and restore the Northern Pacific steam locomotive 2435, the last surviving Prairie Type locomotive built 1906-1907. The city of Duluth will receive $7,000 to gather preliminary ethnographic resources for a study the ethnographic history of the Duluth area. The Historic Union Depot Corporation will receive $5,700 to revitalize the immigration exhibit in the Duluth Union Depot. The Dorothy Molter Foundation and Museum will receive $4,699 to create a disaster plan.Itasca County
The Northern Itasca Joint Powers Board will receive $123,520 to rehabilitate plumbing, electrical and weather-tightness and to restore interior finishes on the log residence of the Marcell Ranger Station, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Cook County
The Gunflint Trail Historical Society will receive $31,124 for professional services to prepare a cultural landscape report for the Chik-Wauk Lodge, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, to guide future historic preservation projects. The Schroeder Area Historical Society will receive $1,125 to transcribe nine previously recorded oral histories documenting the history of the area.
