The St. Louis County Extension and University of Minnesota/St. Louis County Master Gardeners are injecting a little fun into produce at Garden Fest: Potatoes vs. Beets, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 W. Third Street in Duluth.

The program, part of St. Louis County’s Healthy Foods Initiative, focuses on growing and cooking beets and potatoes. The event features a veggie competition between beet supporters and potato lovers describing the merits of both vegetables. Both crops are very nutritious and well suited for area gardens.

Other activities include a presentation on beet and potato gardening, nutrition, preparation, and storage. The evening will end with taste-testing competition, with more than 30 beet and potato recipes available.

Admission is $15 per person. All participants will receive a garden guide/recipe book. Many of the recipes available for sampling will be included in the recipe book. For more information and a registration form please visit www.stlouiscountymn.gov/ext or call
