John E. McDonald, 81, resident of Hermantown died peacefully of coronary artery disease on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, in St. Luke s Hospital.
John E. McDonald, 81, resident of Hermantown died peacefully of coronary artery disease on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, in St. Luke s Hospital.
John was born on Jan. 1, 1931, in Hermantown to Thomas and Essie (Nelson) McDonald.
He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1948 and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1954 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduating from college, he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army where he served two years in the Army Signal Corp. Upon discharge he worked for Sperry Univac, Control Data and Honeywell as an electrical engineer traveling around the United States In later years he worked as a Systems Analyst for St. Louis County.
In retirement John enjoyed his family home in Hermantown where he enjoyed long walks with his dog, gardening and collecting junk. He also enjoyed volunteering as a dog training instructor at the Twin Ports Dog Training Club. His passions in his younger years were many including photography and anything electrical; later years, anything financial.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Joyce McDonald and his brother Myron.
John is survived by his brothers Thomas "Bud" (Lillian), and Daniel of Duluth; sisters Mary Jane (Lloyd) Sandstrom of Lake Havasu, Joan Curry of Hoyt Lakes Judy (James) Holmbeck of Fletcher, N.C., Jean McDonald (Lloyd Peterson) and Jeanette (Duane) Wick of Duluth and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 until the 12 Noon funeral service in Grace Lutheran Church, interment at Forest Hill Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
