A Duluth hospital is among six recognized by the Minnesota Hospital Association with its latest round of Patient Safety Excellence Awards.

Essentia Health Duluth (the former Miller-Dwan Medical Center) was recognized in two of five safety campaigns, according to a hospital association news release.

The hospital association’s campaign recognizes success in these areas:

  • Preventing pressure ulcers or bedsores

  • Preventing falls

  • Preventing wrong-site surgeries or other invasive procedures

  • Preventing foreign objects left behind during labor or delivery.

To win the award in a particular category, the hospital must implement at least 90 percent of required measures. One measure, for instance, requires the hospital to reposition immobile patients every two hours if they are at risk for developing pressure ulcers.

The awards are given quarterly. Essentia Health Duluth previously earned the awards in two of the other categories.

Hospitals in this region that have earned the awards in all five categories are Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet and Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake.
