Reader's View: Only marriage can provide children to society
Marriage is an institution that doesn’t need a new definition to make it more normal.By: Timothy Helwig,
Marriage is an institution that doesn’t need a new definition to make it more normal. Marriage is unique in that a man and a woman can bring the greatest asset to a society, a human being. No other institution can do that. Marriage has been doing this for a long time and will continue to do so in the future. This is why marriage has been given benefits, privileges and promotion. Society saw that this institution is so good it needed to give incentives to ensure families stay together. When families stay together, they bring more stability and life to society. Life is fragile, and it needs to be treated as such.
When abortion became legal, society took a step backwards. Life was no longer treated as fragile. It was redefined as tissue, a blob or a choice. In 1973 and the years following, a majority of people came to believe this. It wasn’t until a few years ago that the majority switched to see that instead of a choice there is a life. Eventually, I believe abortion will be illegal. The only definition of human life is: it is human.
So, just like we can’t redefine life, we can’t redefine marriage. We need to keep marriage as it was, is and ever shall be, one man and one woman. I am voting “yes” on the marriage amendment to protect marriage.
