Essentia Health is adding another hospital to its growing system.
Deer River Healthcare Center will become a part of the Duluth-based health system on Sept. 1, Essentia Health said in a news release. An affiliation agreement was signed Tuesday after months of discussions.
The hospital will be named Essentia Health-Deer River.
“We’re so pleased to join with our colleagues at Deer River Healthcare Center,” said Dr. Daniel Nikcevich, president of Essentia Health’s East Region. “Every step of the way, we have been impressed by the thoughtful dedication of DRHC board members, administrators and community shareholders.”
The Deer River Clinic already is part of the Essentia network. Deer River Healthcare Center operates a long-term care facility and senior apartments in Deer River and two clinics in nearby Grand Rapids.
Essentia has been in an expansion mode. Affiliation talks with hospitals in Moose Lake and Ely were discontinued earlier this year, but the health system continued talks with the city of Virginia regarding city-owned Virginia Regional Medical Center.
The Virginia Hospital Commission has approved affiliation, and the Virginia City Council is expected to vote on the deal late this month or early in September.
On Tuesday, the North Pine Area Hospital District’s board approved a lease deal with Essentia Health regarding the hospital in Sandstone. The board had threatened to break away from Essentia over concerns about a lack of investment in the Sandstone facility.
