It’s time to run (or walk) like an animal

Participants in the Run Like an Animal 5K Run/Walk will be able to show their wild side at the Lake Superior Zoo.
In its third year, participants can either join in the running on race day or be a virtual participant – a new option this year.
“Since the flood, people have been wanting to donate to the zoo,” Keely Johnson, marketing director, told the Budgeteer. “We wanted to facilitate that support and offer participants the opportunity to become involved.”
The June flood caused the race route to be modified a little from last year, she said, but participants can still run in the zoo and on the trails.
The run, which takes place on Aug. 4, is just one of several events planned for the rest of the day – both at the zoo and at the Spirit Valley Days festival.
“We enjoy being involved with the West Duluth community,” Johnson said. “We started the run/walk to be a part of their celebration.”
After the run/walk, there will be music and family-fun activities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., she said. Also between those times, virtual and zoo participants can pick up their t-shirts.
The entry fee is $30 prior to race day or $35 on race day. For zoo members, the fee is $25 prior to race day and $30 on race day. The fee also includes a zoo ticket,
T-shirt, goodie bag and refreshments.
The proceeds benefit the zoo’s rebuilding efforts.
Registration beings at 7 a.m. with the run starting at 8:30 and the walk starting at 8:45. Awards will follow and prizes will be awarded for the best animal costumes.
“We encourage everyone to dress up as an animal,” she said.
Virtual participants have the option of using the course the zoo has mapped out for Aug. 4, or create their own course between July 28 and Aug. 4. They can also print off racing bibs on the zoo’s website.
Register online at www.lszoo.org or call the zoo for more information at (218) 730-4500, ext. 312.
