Reader's view: Response to sexual urges is an excuse for deviancePricked by both the continuing “White Pillory Campaign,” as I’m choosing to call it, and the asinine view of prostitution as a mere businesses transaction, as expressed in a June 29 column, I choose the latter to respond to (An Iron Ranger’s View: “Let’s acknowledge some things are inevitable and move on”).

The idea that the Creator made men overwhelmed by their sexuality is ludicrous and has been used as an excuse for everything from child sexual abuse to rape, incest and other deviances. This excuse also has been used when power lines have been crossed, such as teacher and student and therapist and client. I get the beaver’s teeth and the horse’s hooves, but what happens if a man does not have coitus? Does something grow to problematic proportions? Human males have several normal physiological mechanisms such as nocturnal emission and manually “putting the fire out,” to avoid the column writer’s suggested catastrophe of lack of release. The writer failed to speak to the crimes/issues that come with prostitution, including drugs, abuse, human trafficking and sexually transmitted diseases.
The writer’s dismissal of “male power and control” was particularly troubling and is difficult to respond to other than to suggest that the writer has been living in a cave for a relatively long period of time.
I scoff at the writer’s suggestion that the legalization of prostitution would reduce the maltreatment and the oppression of women; to the contrary, legalized prostitution would further the objectification of women and place even more women with limited opportunities in jeopardy. My experience suggests that opinions that start with, “Let’s acknowledge,” are based in ignorance or are self-serving. Supposedly, if one can get a number of people to agree with their personal proclivities they are assumed normalized.
