Elaina Mattson, 9, and Saige Mattson, 7, wanted to help after the Lake Superior Zoo lost several of its animals. Some of the zoo’s barnyard animals and birds drowned in the recent flood.
“We are zoo members and the girls are crazy about the zoo. We go all the time, they are big animal lovers,” Jenna Mattson, the girls’ mother, told the Budgeteer. “They loved the barnyard animals, petting them and touching them. They also really like the baby animals, especially the lemurs, and the Kodiak and grizzly bears.”
The girls decided to have a lemonade stand on London Road, putting all the money they earned toward helping the zoo.
“We live on a busy street and I think they saw some other kids on a different street with a lemonade stand,” said Mattson. “So they decided they wanted to have one to help.”
The girls made $106.39 in just a couple of hours, thanks to friends, neighbors, and passersby.
