Superior probably won’t meet required criteria to be named a federal disaster area, the city announced Wednesday.
The news is both good and bad, Mayor Bruce Hagen said in a news release.
“Superior escaped the monumental public and private damage that Duluth suffered during the flood,” he said.
As of this week, 14 homes have reported major damage, nearly 300 suffered minor damage and 400 had slight impact from the record rain June 19 and 20 that caused severe flooding of the region. The city probably won’t meet federal requirements for flood relief funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Damage must exceed $7.7 million in the public sector and 582 homes must suffer structural damage of more than 40 percent of the value of the home to qualify.
The city is eligible for road aid matches that will help pay for repairs to North 28th Street, Woodlawn Bridge over the Nemadji River and the reconstruction of the east access road onto Barker’s Island.
Construction of North 28th Street is expected to begin July 16, the Barker’s Island access road is set to begin July 23, and the Woodlawn Bridge is set for Aug. 6.
Free disposal of flood debris extended
The city of Superior, Douglas County and Gordon Correctional Facility inmates have picked up 282 tons of flood-related debris, according to the city.
