UMD pulls out of Un-Fair Campaign

The University of Minnesota Duluth has pulled out of the Un-Fair Campaign.

In a news release this afternoon, UMD said it had “indefinitely suspended” its membership in the campaign, which has used sometimes controversial methods in support of racial equality, “pending a change in the campaign’s emphasis and creative approach.”

The news release said a recent public service announcement from the campaign on white privilege was “divisive” and had “alienated some UMD alumni, supporters and others in the broader community.

At UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black’s request, the public service announcement was pulled from the campaign’s website on June 28.

Representatives from the 18 partners in the campaign met on Monday, the news release said. It said they reaffirmed the group’s fundamental goals but recognized the message and creative emphasis had been divisive.

It said the partners would reconvene on July 17 to discuss whether to change the creative direction.
