The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve office on Barker’s Island in Superior is hosting a workshop on how to build a garden that just might help Lake Superior.

The workshop, set for 10 a.m. to noon July 15, is free and open to the public and will focus on building rain gardens that capture rain and slow runoff.

Rain gardens can be remarkably successful at pooling rain and slowing runoff that can cause erosion, and at cleaning runoff by allowing it to flow through a natural ecosystem before flowing into streams, the harbor and eventually Lake Superior. Participants will be able to see the rain garden now under construction at the Estuarine Reserve office, the former Boathouse Restaurant on Barker’s Island.

Please call ahead and reserve your spot at (715) 392-3141.
