Health Notes: Essentia employees, facilities earn awards

By: John Lundy, Duluth News Tribune

Speaking of Essentia Health, the Duluth-based health system reported several recent awards:

  • The Minnesota Hospital Association recently gave the “Good Catch for Patient Safety Award” to Diane Westling, a perioperative registered nurse, and Andrea Schmaltz, a surgical tech. They were nominated for their efforts to ensure patient safety during a surgical procedure. By following established protocols for counting items used during surgery, the women were able to prevent a surgical sponge from being retained.

  • Essentia Health-Sandstone has received statewide recognition for efforts to support tissue donation. LifeSource recently presented the hospital with a 2011 Minnesota Tissue Donation Partner of the Year award. At Essentia Health-Sandstone in 2011, the wishes of five tissue donors and their families were fulfilled. The gifts from these donors will benefit more than 250 recipients.

  • The American Heart Association named Essentia Health a gold-level “Fit Friendly Company.” This nationwide program highlights companies that make the health and wellness of their employees a priority. At Essentia, employees have access to an on-site fitness center, nutrition classes, smoking cessation support, ergonomic evaluations for the workplace and athletic trainers who specialize in occupational medicine.

This is the first year Twin Ports organizations have received this designation. The University of Minnesota Duluth and Maurices were recognized this year as well.
