So you want a smelt dinner, but you don’t have the time or equipment to net your own. What to do?

Here’s a list of some Northland restaurants that serve smelt. But be warned — much like the fish itself, smelt fries can be transient; some restaurants have smelt on the menu for days on end, others for a very limited time. It’s always best to call ahead and check before making the trip.

  • Breeze Inn, 5168 Jean Duluth Road, north of Duluth, (218) 525-2883

  • Dockside Fish Market, 418 W. Highway 61, Grand Marais, (218) 387-2906

  • Lake Avenue Café, 394 S. Lake Ave., Duluth, (218) 722-2355

  • Lighthouse at Emily’s, 218 Scenic Drive, Knife River, (218) 834-2501

  • Mr. D’s Bar and Grill, 5622 Grand Ave., Duluth, (218) 624-4178

  • Northern Lights Restaurant, 1040 Main Street, Beaver Bay, (218) 226-3012

  • Pickwick Restaurant and Pub, 508 E. Superior St., Duluth, (218) 623-7425

  • Tappa Keg Inn, 7036 Grand Ave., Duluth, (218) 624-9881

  • Vanilla Bean Café, 812 Seventh Ave. (Highway 61), Two Harbors, (218) 834-3714

You also can try calling the Lake Superior Fish Co., (715) 392-3101, to see if they have any smelt left for retail sale that you can take home and prepare yourself. It’s getting near the end of the season, though, so supplies may be limited.

    Upcoming fundraisers:

  • 22nd Annual Kiwanis Smelt Fry: Thursday, April 26, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Northstar Bar, 1675 Highway 210, Carlton. Coleslaw, rolls, chips, beverage and all-you-can-eat smelt. Adults $8; kids 12 and under $4.

  • This list is not definitive — if you know of another Northland restaurant still serving smelt this season, or an upcoming smelt fry organized by a church or other group, send an e-mail to akrueger@duluthnews.com and we’ll add it to this list online.
