Overheard / Duluth’s City Hall furniture purchase

“So, regarding the $90,000 city of Duluth furniture deal: the city bonded for a new police station, and it came in under budget; rather than paying down on the bond obligation the city owes and reducing the taxpayers’ debt, the dollars were redirected to buy all of this furniture, totally unrelated to police activities. Tell me, what is wrong with this when considering both responsibility and government honesty? How deep does the city want to continue to dig debt? To my surprise, I was the lone objecting vote.”

Duluth City Councilor Garry Krause, as posted on his Facebook page (and edited by the News Tribune Opinion page, with Krause’s blessing) after the Duluth City Council voted 6-1 Monday to purchase more than $90,000 of office furniture for the space in City Hall formerly occupied by the Duluth Police Department. The first-floor space is to be used by 13 Parks and Recreation Department employees and eight members of the city’s Parking Department.

“We’re basically equipping an entire office. … We do think this is cost-effective.”

“We’re trying to provide employees with good, effective work stations so they can be effective in their jobs.”

Duluth Chief Administrative Officer David Montgomery, in News Tribune reports before Monday’s council vote.
