Wisconsin college professor gets grant to study concussions

MILWAUKEE — The Department of Defense is awarding a professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin a $1.9 million grant to study the best ways to diagnose and assess the recovery times for concussions.
Michael McCrea is a professor of neurosurgery and neurology and director of brain injury research. He's also a neuropsychologist at Froedtert Hospital.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports McCrea will examine four computerized cognitive assessment tests — two used often in the sports world. He will then determine how well they detect concussion effects and how well they measure recovery time.
He says there are a number of cognitive assessment tools but little data on the reliability and validity of the tools.
More than 178,000 servicemen and women were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury between 2000 and 2010.
