Superior meeting will inform seniors of medical benefits

A town hall meeting will be held in Superior today to inform seniors of the types of benefits available under the new federal Affordable Care Act.

The Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans and Know Your Care Wisconsin are trying to highlight the free benefits available to senior citizens through the health insurance reform law pushed by President Obama, reviled by critics as Obamacare.

The meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave.

Doug Hill is the director of Know Your Care Wisconsin, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to educating the public about the Affordable Care Act. He says one of the biggest hurdles he’s facing is getting people to understand the law and how it affects them.

“With any piece of public policy there’s going to be some questions, and I think sometimes people are looking for an easy, quick answer,” he said. “But oftentimes there’s not an easy, quick answer and you need to take some personal responsibility and understand how certain types of laws and public policy affect you.”

Although Gov. Scott Walker turned down federal aid to implement the health-care law, Hill said the federal government will come in and set up an exchange where citizens can compare and choose private insurance plans that best suit their needs.
