Duluth bed-and-breakfast earns national distinction
Tim Allen said that he and his wife Angie are still in shock that the Duluth bed-and-breakfast they own and operate was chosen as top in the nation. It was only a week ago when the couple got a call from TripAdvisor, an online site where travelers can plan vacations, informing them that the A.G. Thomson House Historic Bed & Breakfast was ranked as first out of more than 21,000 bed-and-breakfasts across the United States.

It was only a week ago when the couple got a call from TripAdvisor, an online site where travelers can plan vacations, informing them that the A.G. Thomson House Historic Bed & Breakfast was ranked as first out of more than 21,000 bed-and-breakfasts across the United States.
“Even more shocking to us is that they picked us as the eleventh best in the world,” Tim said. “It’s hard to wrap your brain around something like that. It really came out of the blue for us.”
Located at 2617 E. Third Street, the A.G. Thomson House Historic Bed & Breakfast opened in 2007. The bed-and-breakfast has seven guest rooms in two houses — the Main House and the Carriage House, and both houses overlook Lake Superior.
“A lot of inns have common traits about them, but we have two-person whirlpools in the rooms, and fireplaces,” Tim said. “I like to think that we are a little more upscale.”
Among the other amenities the Allens provide at their bed-and-breakfast are wireless Internet service and flat-screen TVs. Each of the seven rooms is unique in its style, and several of the names are suited to the area, including the Lake Superior Suite and the North Shore Retreat.
Allen said the bed-and-breakfast was recognized as the top in Minnesota for several years, and the A.G. Thomson House was named “Best Bed & Breakfast of the Midwest” by Midwest Living magazine.
“We didn’t know we were competitive at the national level,” Tim said. “When they called us last week to tell us, we were in disbelief.”
For ten years, TripAdvisor has been presenting Travelers’ Choice awards to honor the best hotels throughout the world. Award winners are chosen based on the millions of reviews that are made by real travelers on www.tripadvisor.com.
“With the help of millions of travelers around the globe, TripAdvisor is thrilled to distinguish the world’s most outstanding hotels for the tenth year of the Travelers’ Choice Awards,” said Karen Drake, senior director of communications for TripAdvisor. “From the best bargain hotels to best luxury hotels, remarkable service, value and quality are the hallmarks for our Travelers’ Choice winners.”
Each year, TripAdvisor chooses the top 25 hotels throughout the world by looking at the reviews travelers post on their website, and the top choices are then ranked.
