2011 Gala

On Thursday, November 17th the entire Henry Sibley Music Department performed their annual gala concert. The gala involved the Sibley Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Carillon, Men’s Cantabile and Concert Choirs. Nine pieces were performed and the gala was directed by Ms. Bartos, Mr. Kapaun and Mrs. Booth. The orchestra played “Suite For Strings” by Robert Washburn and “Exit Music (For a Film)” by Radiohead where groups of players stood up during the song and exited the stage. The Wind Ensemble then played “Chorale and Shaker Dance” by John P. Zdechlik. The Carillon Choir performed “She Shall Have Music,” the Men’s Cantabile Choir performed “Wanting Memories,” and the Concert Choir sang “Omnia Soil (Let Your Heart Be Staid),” and “Tshotsholosa,” a South African miner song. All music departments came together for “Duel of Fates” from Star Wars- Episode 1 which was awe-inspiring, as well as “Dry Your Tears For Afrika” from Amistad, both of which were composed by John Williams.

It is always wonderful to see the all of the parts of the music department collaborate like this, and it was especially interesting this year because the big collaborative effort at the end involved such powerful pieces, musically (“Duel of Fates”) and thematically (“Dry Your Tears For Afrika”). Henry Sibley is one of few high schools in the state that has all three – the band, orchestra, and choir – in the same high school. Seeing all of this talent on display in one night is truly moving.
