Artists' Corner : Arthur Allie

Have you ever sat in, let’s say, a dentist’s office, and enjoyed a simple piece of art? Maybe it was a portrait of a flower or a log cabin, or maybe it was an abstract picture of rapid brush strokes and popping colors. Do you glance at this piece of art, enjoying the simple picture for a couple of seconds, and then go about the rest of your day? Have you ever thought that maybe it’s not just a simple flower? Maybe there’s something more to the picture, something with further meaning or beauty or emotion? Have you ever looked at a painting through the artist’s eyes and tried to hear their voice through the painting? You may find that you learn something about the world, or even yourself, that you never knew before. You may begin to appreciate art in ways that you never have.

The students here at Henry Sibley make up a very unique crowd of individuals. We all have something special to offer the world whether it involves sports, academics, music, or art. We each have a passion, a story or a message that we want to share and we all have our own way of sharing it.

One of these young and creative students, Arthur Allie, a senior, shares his message through his artwork. Arthur gives us the inside scoop on the meaning behind his drawings as he shares a piece of one of his skilled sketches of a bird sitting on a flower. Arthur uses techniques such as sketching, drawing and shading in his works. He says that one day, while gazing out his window, this image of a bird sitting on a flower had caught his eye. He liked the way the bird was positioned and appreciated how close the bird was to him without flying away. Though it is a simple black and white picture of a bird, Arthur proves that there is so much more to it. Arthur explains how it symbolizes a deeper meaning to connections with surroundings. For example, he noticed the innocence of how the bird was so close, and he appreciated the way they could coexist. Arthur wants the spectator to feel the silence, peace, innocence and sincerity that he felt while drawing this. He explains that, in the crazy stressful days that make up our lives, we frantically run around from one thing to the next, and rarely take time out of our day to appreciate the quiet things. We fail to look and be patient for the meaning. His picture brings the spectator to appreciate something more than themselves, which is often hard to do in the self-centered world that we live in.

The main message Arthur is trying to get through to us is that we should stop and appreciate the little things in life and that there is beauty in everything that shouldn’t be brushed off. All of this can be explained through art.

The inspiring artist of seventeen shows us that art can be a powerful thing- it causes one to look into himself and at the world in different ways. His creativity has been a wonderful contribution to the variety of talent shared here at Henry Sibley.

Arthur Allie would like to pursue art as a career for his entire life. He explains that you can do many things with it and that, despite the fact he might not make much money, he would be content knowing that his voice would come from his drawings.
