Construction Zone: New Horizons Children’s Center of Superior

New Horizons Children’s Center of Superior is having 8,500 square feet on the north side of the mall remodeled into a child care center with a 6,700-square-foot fenced playground right outside.

What: New Horizons Children’s Center of Superior

Where: Mariner Mall in Superior

Business owner: Cindy Fennessey

Project: Remodel 8,500 square feet on the north side of the mall into a child care center with a 6,700-square-foot fenced playground right outside. The center will have a commons area and individual classrooms with restrooms. The space formerly was used for storage by Johnson Brothers Furniture.

Background: New Horizons’ current location at 2307 Catlin Ave. is earmarked for demolition, forcing the move. When Fennessey’s original plans to build her own building didn’t come together in time, she opted to invest in space at the mall. With the move, the 6-year-old business will expand from 92 children from 2 weeks old to 12 years old, to up to 114. It has a staff of 20, including teachers.

General contractor: Max Gray Construction, Duluth.

Architect: The Meyer Group, Duluth.

Project status: Three weeks into the project, some of the new doors and windows have been installed, electrical and plumbing work has been done, and some interior walls are up, framed and drywalled.

Timeline: Work began Aug. 15 and should be completed in time for the planned Oct. 4 opening.

Project cost: $360,000

Call: (715) 392-4211 for more information about the center.
