Signs of the times

A friend and I were on a trail on the Seven Bridges Road, taking pictures of flowers and scenery, when we came across this sign. It’s not an unusual sign, but what someone wrote on it caught our attention and we had a good laugh over it.

Last summer, I was driving down 21st Street in Superior and I saw this sign and had to do a double-take. Soft-serve crawlers? Ewwww! I hope they meant soft-serve cones and crawlers for sale there.

This sign was on a hotel in Grand Rapids.

In 2001, these two billboards were on Garfield Avenue in Duluth.

Elaine Nordstrom of Duluth submitted this photo of a sign in Carcross, Yukon.

Sara Zachow of Superior submitted this photo, which was taken at a bar in uptown Minneapolis.

My husband and I were driving near Finland when we came upon this sign on a road. Since my name is Patty, I thought this sign was pretty funny!

My husband, our two sons and I came across this billboard some years ago near Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fla. We all thought it might be bad for the tattoo business.

This photo was taken after a beautiful ride in the Bird Sanctuary by Solon Springs. My friend Dawn’s horse, Strawberry, made herself comfortable in the flowers after the ride. By the way, she wasn’t at the club house lawn — it was up the hill behind her.

Adam Rollin of Hermantown, a self-proclaimed "funny sign hound," submitted the following photos:

At the Super One store by the mall, I was in the mood for a doughnut. They were baking some doughnuts and the aroma they distribute within the store locked me into getting one. I was browsing the pastry case, and I almost made up my mind to get a triangle-shaped doughnut. I say “almost” because only then did I read the sign describing what I was about to buy. (Definitely not the smell I was beckoned by). The sign said the pastry was a Bettercreme-filled Wedgie. A wedgie is bad enough. But filled with BETTERcreme? I can’t think of any creme that would make a wedgie better! I settled with the Texas donut right off the picture.

Essentia Health has a nice little café called the Garden Café. They recently got new technology so Essentia employees can use their name badges to get items. They also made a sign advertising that. But to you and me, the sign looks like it was made by someone to boast about a lunch they stole from the Garden Café. Not the point here!

This one must be my favorite. It was taken at Cub Foods in Duluth. I was reaching for a flyer, when I noticed that this “Five-Day Sale” lasted for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Let’s count: Thursday (1), Friday (2), and Saturday (3). Confusing!

One morning (Sept. 7) while sipping my country-style orange juice during breakfast, I navigated to the weather section of my favorite local newspaper. I look at the week’s forecast by looking at the weather illustrations first, then looking at the caption for more details. I was surprised to find the next day (Wednesday) was going to host a thunderstorm that would be “pleasant with light winds.” Hmm.

While at Sam’s Club, I wandered into the television section for no reason at all. Above all the other televisions a sign boasting a wondrous 3D demo beckoned me. Arriving at the demo, I was disappointed to find the wonder was a weak signal. How ironic! By the way, 3D snow/static isn’t as impressive as it was hyped up to be. Even more interesting, they shut the TV off two seconds after I snapped the picture!

This photo was taken on our way back from a fishing trip on Lake Nipigon in Ontario, Canada, in June 2009. The sign is in the town of Nipigon, and we saw it while walking around the town waiting for a tire to be repaired/

replaced.

We have seen many interesting signs in our travels and around the neighborhood.

The top picture shows the humor that someone had. The original sign was “Caution Children Playing,” but someone decided to show their fun side and put up the geezer sign. This sign can be seen in Lincoln Park near Exeter Street.

The lower left photo shows a sign we saw on a door at a motel in Hinckley near the pool. We thought it was funny that “Emergency” was spelled wrong and that is says “This is not a door.”

The sign in the lower right picture, Nicole saw on her way home from the bank one day. It is in front of a house on Grand Avenue, near Arby’s. The way the sign was placed it seemed like it was indicating that the tree was for rent. The sign is no longer there so the tree (or more likely the house) must have been rented.
