Domestic abuse fundraiser renamed for Duluth woman

An annual event held for domestic abuse intervention programs has been renamed to honor a Duluth woman who was killed by her estranged husband last year.

The Walk/Run for Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs is now the Kay Marie Sisto Memorial Walk/Run to end Domestic Violence. Registration begins at noon May 22 with the event beginning at 1 p.m. behind the Willard Munger Inn, 7408 Grand Ave. Participants will walk or run five or 10 kilometers on the Western Waterfront Trail.

Sisto, who was divorcing Michael Peterson, was shot by him three times May 26, 2010, in their Smithville home. Peterson then killed himself. Sisto’s sister, Kim Robinson, said Sisto was leaving to meet her father for a walk when she was killed. She encouraged people to walk in memory of her.

In 2010, 15 women, seven children, four family members and friends and two men died from domestic violence, according to the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women.
