This year Student Council has two new advisers. Diana Wells and Krista Soderstrom, both physical education teachers, will take over for previous advisers Marc Campbell and Angela Johnson.
“We decided to advise student council this year because it would be nice to get more involved with the students again, rather than just a classroom setting,” Wells said.
In previous years here at SHS, Wells and Soderstrom have both been coaches. Wells coached girls soccer and Soderstrom coached volleyball.
Student Council will be coming up with school-wide issues that they believe are important and work hard to fix them.
“And we have found, looking over other schools, student council is often called a school senate. To me, that means a governing body that will stand up and bring issues to teachers and administration in the building,” Wells said.
Winter Formal is now called Fall Ball because Prom is taking place in April instead of May. The Winter Semi-Formal has to be bumped up to November to give students the time and money to have the ideal prom experience.
“We really want to stress that the Fall Ball is semi-formal. So all the ladies thinking about attending the dance won’t have to be spending $500.00 on a gown,” Wells said.
Fall Ball will be held here at the school, differing from the previous years, when winter formal was at Barkers Island.
“Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Johnson did a fantastic job advising student council. But we are completely different people, so why not try different things?” Wells said.
This year in particular, student council members want to work on breaking down social class barriers, and help SHS become more accepting of other students.
“Student Council is more of a leadership organization than anything, a group willing to represent our student body,” Soderstrom said.
This year student council is also debating on doing Deck the Gym. Wells worked at a Banquet Center where she decorated weddings and parties beautifully. Her experience will be helpful.
“Deck the Gym is simply decorating it with posters, so Mrs.Well’s new decorating ideas will definitely be put to good use during this event and Fall Ball,” senior Chaila Runions, president of Student Council, said.
“We want Student Council this year, to be a little more involved with the student life and school climate. We would like to see SHS become even more prideful, be a community together,” Wells said.
