Sheree Domagall of Lakewood Township has been watching this squirrel near her home for a few weeks. “It looks to me it looks like a raccoon got a little friendly with one of our squirrels. What do you think?” she asks.
Martha Minchak, assistant area wildlife manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Duluth, doubts the racoon connection.
“I’ve never seen one with just the tail like that, though we have some pretty weird looking ones around our place (mostly black-gray mixes). I suspect it’s just a strange color variation and not some cross-breeding situation,” Minchak said.
