Duluthian Sandy Erickson shared with us the story of the pictured unique weather vane, which was crafted by second cousins of hers in Norway.
Erickson first became acquainted with some of her distant relatives in ’06, but it wasn’t until two years ago that she was able to visit them in Rissa, Norway. While there, Geir Berg and Bjornar Melhus made the weather vane for her in the factory they work at.
She said the moose part (which has the Norwegian word for it, “elg,” printed on the other side) was too big for her suitcase, so that had to be mailed back to the States.
It turns out Berg and Melhus are in the area this week for a family reunion; they are joined by Oddrun Berg, also of Norway. Erickson said the timing of their visit was perfect, as they had a chance to see the Tall Ships come in.
