In pursuit of brook trout

I joined Brian Larsen of Grand Marais on a little brook trout excursion Thursday afternoon. Larsen has been fishing for brookies in streams all of his life. We did a fair bit of walking through the woods, which is usually what brook trout fishing involves. Sometimes those walks lead to good brook trout fishing, and sometimes they don't pan out. We found one of each kind of spot on Thursday.
We ended up catching about 10 brookies and losing a lot more. Nothing big. But if you love brookies, then you know the little ones fight just as hard and are just as beautiful as the big ones. The ones we caught would have looked good in a frying pan, but we had decided before we started to let all of them go.
Here's one of the little fellows we released:

I'll put together a full story on our outing for next Sunday, Aug. 1.
