Duluth police are warning businesses and residents about fake $100 bills being passed in the community.
Police said they are investigating a number of reports of counterfeit $100 bills passed in the past week, according to a news release.
The bills are of good quality and are made from real $5 bills. Because of this, they look and feel like real $100 bills and can easily be mistaken without close examination. The fake bills still have two security features that separate them from genuine $100 bills: If you hold up a real $100 bill to the light, you should see a watermark portrait of Benjamin Franklin to one side of the bill and “USA100” printed in the bill’s security thread.
The counterfeit $100 bills still have the security features of a real $5 bill: a watermark portrait of Abraham Lincoln to one side and “USAFIVE” printed on the security thread.
Police are alerting merchants that counterfeit detection pens are ineffective in recognizing these counterfeits. Police are asking everyone to carefully examine all currency in denominations of $20 or larger.
Anyone who receives a counterfeit $100 bill is asked to call 911.
