Rethink Arizona opposition

Some time ago a lady wrote (in the Budgeteer) about how terrible Arizona’s illegal immigration law was. I’ve thought about that letter a lot. Not about how it mirrors federal law, but I think about the boys and girls who go to bed and wake up without a dad.

Illegals have murdered ranchers, law enforcement officers and others. This is who I feel sad about — not about the trash on people’s land, not the terror of those living there, not the potential of terrorists coming in, not the burden to taxpayers, but those living without a loved one.

How would the letter writer feel if it was her dad or mom shot down

by illegals?

What is also sad is our president saying the same thing. I hope you all sleep well.

Jaros backs Welty

I urge the Minnesota District 7 Senate DFL delegates to endorse Harry Welty on Wednesday. I have known Harry since 1976 when he ran against me for Minnesota House District 7B state representative. He ran an honest campaign based on issues.

Like many Republicans, Welty has joined our DFL family because the GOP has been taken over by extreme people like Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and (former) Gov. Sarah Palin.

Welty should be elected for many reasons, but the most important one is because he has always supported the 1971 Minnesota Miracle law passed by the conservative Legislature and signed into law by liberal Gov. Wendy Anderson. This law increased income and sales taxes and created local government and school aids to reduce the regressive property taxes by helping to fund local services and education.

Unfortunately, this excellent policy was destroyed and Duluth, St. Louis County and Duluth School District 709 have lost millions of dollars from St. Paul.

To make things worse, the Duluth School Board has authorized the so-called “Red Plan” designed by Johnson Control Corporation of Milwaukee, which will cost our homeowners and businesses $437 million. This plan is closing, tearing down and building new school buildings. Welty has opposed this awful abuse of our school board’s power and organized the group “Let Duluth Vote” to have a referendum as well as proposed a less-expensive alternative. His opponent, Roger Reinert, supports the Red Plan.

Let us send Harry Welty to St. Paul to fight for fair taxation and reinstatement of the local government and school aid to reduce property taxes.
