State softball: Hermantown, Barnum lose in title games
Hermantown and Barnum lost in championship games Friday at the Minnesota high school softball tournament in North Mankato, Minn.
Park Center defeated Hermantown 2-1 in Class AA, while New Life Academy of Woodbury blanked Barnum 2-0 in Class A.
After Hermantown tied the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth, Park Center answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run as Kati Fern doubled and moved to third on a ground ball before scoring on an infield single to the pitcher off the bat of Nicola Tade.
Tade earned the win for Park Center, working seven innings and scattering five hits while striking out 12.
Hermantown's Megan Mullen took the loss as she worked six innings and allowed four runs and struck out nine.
New Life Academy's Rebekah Schmidt did it all in the Class A final. Not only did she score the only runs of the game with a two-run blast in the top of the first inning, but she pitched a complete-game three-hitter to pace New Life. Schmidt finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate, and worked seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 14. Over the course of the tournament, Schmidt struck out 49 batters.
