Sometimes it’s all right to let kids get away with things. As long as the things that they are getting away with aren’t extremely bad. Occasionally I’ll let the kids stay up a little later than they should be so we can finish a movie or read a book. And sometimes I allow them to eat one more cookie than they are supposed to. It’s not a big deal. They didn’t break the law or someone’s arm.
But if you always let kids get away with things, then they will take advantage of you and you will no longer be in control. I was babysitting once and the little girl said that they had gotten away with murder before and would be able to trick me into letting them do anything. I can be a little easy on kids, but I won’t let them get away with murder.
Babysitters do not have to be strict and uptight. They just have to let the kids know that they’re in charge. It’s like training a puppy. If you don’t tell them that you’re the boss, then they won’t listen and behave properly. Have fun with the kids, but if you’re a babysitter, then take responsibility and be in control.
