Heavy Metal is a very popular topic of debate. Some people consider it music, while others look upon it as merely noise.
According to “Rustic Girls’” website, Metal has been around for 50 years. The need for youth to rebel against the status quo and let out their frustrations keeps the roots of this music alive. The first real metal band was Black Sabbath, formed in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Lommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward.
Metal has branched into many sub-groups such as; Black Metal, Death Metal, Doom Metal, Folk Metal, Metal Core, and many others. Each sub-group has its own twist off of the Blues scale that the Black Sabbath used and moved to more diatonic modes.
Many people view Metal as noise and don’t even consider it as a type of music, but there are many people out there that view it not only as music, but as a lifestyle as well. I personally believe that Metal bands work just as hard if not harder to critique and perfect their music. They certainly have skills that many other musicians could never even attempt, such as screaming. Many metal bands scream the lyrics of their songs in both high and low pitches.
No matter what some people say, there is definitely an art to Metal. It definitely fits on the musical shelf with any other genre.
