5Q :: Free fun for everyone at Morgan Park’s ‘Everybody Outside!’ event
From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 1, Morgan Park will play host to a free community event being put on by UMD’s large events management class.
Who says UMD’s large events management class doesn’t know how to party?
The brainchild of course instructor Dr. Mark Zmudy’s students, Saturday’s “Everybody Outside!” event in Morgan Park promises to be a rollicking — well, at least pleasurable — good time.
This free, fun-for-the-whole-family event includes a number of activities, including fishing skills and interpretive hikes.
The purpose of Everybody Outside! is to highlight outdoor and recreation opportunities for kids across Duluth, particularly in the West Duluth area.
As it is being organized by Zmudy’s pupils, we thought we’d talk to one. Ladies and gentlemen, Brita Kotilinek:
Budgeteer: How did this event come about?
Kotilinek: Everybody Outside! was formed for our large events management class at UMD.
Everybody in the class comes up with an idea for an event, then the class decides which event we will actually go through and plan.
Why are you in Dr. Zmudy’s class? How will it tie into what you want to do, career-wise?
I am a marketing major and the reason I am in Dr. Zmudy’s class is I need to take upper-division classes outside the Labovitz School of Business. I am on the marketing committee in the class, so I am actually getting experience with marketing.
What are some of the free activities planned for this Morgan Park event? And what are you most excited to partake in?
Some of the free activities that will be held at Everybody Outside! are: fishing tactics, navigation, interpretive hiking, arts and crafts, slackline, camp craft, birding and disc golf. I am actually most excited to make arts and crafts.
In honor of the new season, what’s your favorite spring pastime in Duluth?
My favorite spring pastime in Duluth is actually just running outside. I like winter for a while, but then I get excited for the snow to melt and being able to enjoy the outdoors.
I also participated in the 5K Trail Run at UMD on April 24.
Finally ... what’s new at UMD? For those of us who aren’t there day to day, what’s the most exciting development happening on the campus?
The Labovitz School of Business and Economics building opened last school year. I get to enjoy the building everyday; it is very enjoyable to take classes in the new building.
UMD is also getting a new chancellor starting next year.
