You could take a babysitting class or you could babysit with an experienced babysitter to see how it’s done, but I think one of the best ways to prepare is to have “the babysitting skills”. Knowing how to change a diaper or knowing what to do when a bee stings a kid are important. But there are other things that you should know that will help you throughout the entire night, not just during an emergency.
For instance, some of the kids I babysit absolutely love to play video games. So I bring over my Gamecube or Wii games to play with kids. Kids love it that I have something in common with them and that I’m a pretty good player. Well this usually scores more points with boys than girls but it’s still a useful skill.
I’ve mentioned in a previous entry that one of the girls I babysit loves the soundtrack to Mamma Mia. It’s quite convenient that I know the words to those songs because we can listen to the disc and pass the time. A lot of little girls love the Disney channel and all of the stars on it. Miley Cyrus is a huge a hit. One of the songs that she sings has a dance that goes with it and it would be helpful if I knew it because a little girl I babysit said that she wants to learn it.
Kids love to jump rope and they love to sing rhymes while jumping. It wouldn’t be bad to know how to play basketball or how to do an underdog on a swing set. I’m not saying that the only way you will be able to babysit successfully is by knowing all these little tricks. And I’m also not saying that you should memorize the words to every song that’s popular among kids. But if you do have some of these skills, don’t forget to use them. They will be quite handy the next time you babysit.
