Construction Zone: Woodland Marketplace Foods, formerly Piggly Wiggly
What: Woodland Marketplace Foods, formerly Piggly Wiggly
Where: 4020 Woodland Ave., Duluth
Owner: The property is owned by Ronald Truscott while Miner’s Inc. leases the space and owns the business.
Project: The longtime neighborhood grocery store is getting a complete makeover, inside and out. It’s also getting a new name. Although the store won’t be physically bigger, the inside will be reconfigured to expand the produce, meat and dairy sections around the perimeter.
Timeline: Work on the exterior began last fall and is nearly complete. The interior renovation begins this week and should be completed by late May.
Hours: The store will maintain its regular hours during construction: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Of special note: The store was the last remaining Piggly Wiggly store in Minnesota, said Patrick Miner, Miners Inc.’s store director. Miner’s Inc. purchased the Piggly Wiggly store in the early 1960s. The Miners grocery store operation was small then, so it needed the name recognition Piggly Wiggly provided.
Today, with 29 Super One Foods stores, Miners Inc. no longer needs the Piggly Wiggly franchise. With the company looking to invest in the store, it was a good time to drop the franchise and change the name, Miner said. The new store offers some of the same sales as Super One Foods but isn’t big enough to offer them all.
