St. Paul – Wayne State College defeated Minnesota Duluth 77-67 Sunday afternoonto win the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s basketball playoff title at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul.
The Wildcats won their second NSIC playoff championship, the last coming in 2006, thanks to the play of tournament MVP Mara Hjelle. She scored 26 in the final and averaged 20 points per game in three tournament games. The Wildcats took advantage of their opportunities at the free throw line going 30-for-30. League MVP Jheri Booker led UMD with 26 points and Lindsay Miller had 14. Wayne State led 40-35 at the half.
The Wildcats earned an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division II Central Region next weekend. Colorado State University-Pueblo, winners of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, earned their conference’s automatic bid Saturday. The six other teams in the field will be announced Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. during the NCAA Division II selection show. UMD is expecting an at-large bid.
