LSC to develop 'military bridge' PT program

Lake Superior College received grant to create a program to help military trained physical therapy personnel meet civilian hospital and clinic standards, the school announced today.

Lake Superior College received a $48,500 grant from the MnSCU HealthForce Minnesota Center of Excellence to create a program to help military trained physical therapy personnel meet civilian hospital and clinic standards, the school announced today.

Current military trained physical therapist assistants don't meet education requirements to practice physical therapy as civilians in most states.

The online program will fulfill requirements for an Associate of Applied Science degree.

“These military-trained personnel represent an untapped resource for meeting the need in this important, high-demand healthcare field,” Susan Speetzen, health-care industry specialist for DEED’s Workforce Development division, said in a news release.

Once developed, LSC’s program will be available online for active military personnel and veterans.

“This program will address a recognized shortage of physical therapist assistants and offer a career ladder step for our deserving veterans and military personnel,” Military Bridge Director Jane Worley, director of the physical therapist assistant program at LSC, said in a release.

The program is expected to be available in fall 2011. For more information, contact Worley at (218) 733-7632 or j.worley@lsc.edu.
