Body Art
Tattoos are a unique form of art that have been around for ages.By: Lyn Jenson, East High School
The body is a canvas waiting to be painted. Its skin is waiting to be stained with ink. Tattoos are an art form of precision.
According to “Design Boom’s” website, tattoos date back at least 5,000 years. In 1991 the frozen body of a man labeled Otzi the Ice man was found on a mountain between Austria and Italy. The man had 57 tattoos, most of which are believed to have been used for therapeutic reasons. Evidence of tattoos have also been found from ancient Egypt, Japan, China, Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Africa, Greece, Rome, South and Central America, and finally North America.
In modern day culture tattoos sometimes come with a stigma. Some are thought of as gang signs or signs of drunken stupidity.
However I think that tattoos can be a beautiful symbol of an individual. They can amplify the beauty of the human body as an artful accessory.
“I think too many tattoos can be trashy, but they’re a good expression of thine inner self,” said junior Madeline Jefferson.
Tattoo artists have to have acute precision and concentration. If they mess up once, it’s permanent. The customer has to have the utmost trust and confidence in the artist they choose. A tattoo is a life decision.
