With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday, some area restaurants have planned special menus throughout the weekend — and are doing so with flair.

Multiple courses with exotic and romantic food and luxury ingredients are coming into play. Some restaurants are packaging value-oriented special meals. The News Tribune collected a sampling of local offerings to guide you in your dining a deux.

  • Ledge Rock Grille in Two Harbors is serving a $49 four-course meal tonight and Sunday, with several choices for each course. Executive sous chef Todd Torricer hails from Hawaii, and “the islands” are his influences in many of the dishes, like “Big Island Mahi Mahi.” He stuck with some classics such as lobster bisque, but he also wanted to add aphrodisiacs, with Oysters Rockefeller and the use of sparkling wine and strawberries.

“It’s something that comes from the heart,” Torricer said of his menu inspiration. “I was thinking of passion.”

  • Chester Creek Cafe in Duluth is offering three Valentine’s Day-oriented menu items tonight, including a rare-for-the-cafe surf and turf, using Thousand Hills Cattle Co. grass-fed ribeye seasoned with a North African spice blend, white chocolate whipped potatoes and seared scallops dusted with cocoa and coriander.

“I’ve always kind of liked white chocolate whipped potatoes,” said Bruce Wallis, chef manager of the café, who created the menu. “What better meal to have chocolate with your entree?”

The restaurant is also doing Eggs Benedict and mimosas for Sunday brunch.

  • Not a restaurant, but here’s something for those who want to dine in and don’t want to do any shopping. Great Lakes Distributing in Duluth will deliver two 8-ounce tenderloins, two 6-ounce lobster tails and a bottle of white zinfandel for $35 to any home in the Twin Ports area if you call by 4 p.m. today.

“It’s something a little more economical on what’s a traditional eat-out day,” said owner Chris Regan.

  • Nokomis Restaurant & Bar in Duluth is doing some interesting things with lobster and lobster-like monkfish. It’s $39 three-course menu tonight and Sunday includes a light pasta with lobster meat and artichokes and monkfish wrapped in pancetta. A chocolate terrine rounds out the decadence, and a wine pairing is available.

“People don’t usually go out and buy lobster” but it’s a popular Valentine’s Day request, said chef and co-owner Sean Lewis.

  • Grandma’s Restaurant Co. has a couple of different offerings. All of its Saloon & Grill restaurants will offer a $39.99 four-course meal for two. That gets you an appetizer, two salads, two entrees, two glasses of wine and chocolate truffles. President Brian Daugherty said the entrees to select from are Grandma’s “best of.” Bellisio’s is holding a $49.99 three-course Tuscan-themed dinner at Canal Park Lodge that includes a beef tenderloin and shrimp linguine with lobster sauce dish. Only a few spots remain.

Other restaurants with special menus or deals include the New Scenic Café in Duluth and the Shack in Superior, which is doing dinner theater Sunday. Dinner and beer and wine tastings are held tonight and Sunday at Glensheen Mansion, catered by Savories Catering. A tour, alcohol, dinner in the winter garden and a rose are included in the $62 price tag.
