A finger of lake-effect snow off Lake Superior was pointed at the North Shore most of Monday, dropping as much as 15 inches in some areas and causing slippery roads.

The National Weather Service in Duluth said areas along the North Shore near Silver Bay and inland to Finland saw a foot early in the day and there was one report of 15 inches between Silver Bay and Two Harbors.

As winds switched from the east to northeast, the finger of snow then pointed at Two Harbors and eventually Duluth, where several inches of new snow was expected Monday night. Duluth International Airport reported 3 inches at 6 p.m. Monday and was expected to pick up about an additional inch of snow during the evening.

Heavier snow was reported in West Duluth, Smithville, Cloquet and Carlton, the latter of which received about 5 inches of snow in three hours between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Brisk, cold east and northeast winds over the open waters of Lake Superior dropped the moisture on land. As winds shift to blow out of the north, a lake-effect snow warning has been issued for Wisconsin’s South Shore snowbelt, where more than 10 inches of new snow could fall through tonight.

A fatal accident occurred on Minnesota State Highway 61 in Lake County late Monday afternoon, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

A 2001 Ford Explorer was traveling north on the highway at 4:37 p.m., lost control on the ice-covered roadway, entered the right ditch and came to rest upside-down near the Anderson Road intersection. Two people were in the Explorer. The State Patrol did not make it clear whether one or both people had died.

The victims’ identities are expected to be released today.
