Stuff We Like: Do North cheeseburger pizza serves its pickle in the middle

I judge all bacon cheeseburger pizzas against that South Superior legend that comes from the ovens of Shamrock Pizza.

I’d heard a few things about Do North Pizzeria, with Two Harbors and Hermantown locations, when I wrote about the best pizzas in the Northland last year. The newish pizza-maker was cut from the list because we went by reader nominations, but I tried them for the first time this week.

When I saw bacon cheeseburger on the menu, it seemed like a good time to pit Shamrock against another. I was sort of expecting no contest, but I was wrong. Do North makes a competitive version, and for me it’s based on one tiny detail: chopping up the pickles and baking them right in there with the rest of the ingredients.

Its other plusses: well-seasoned beef and flavorful bacon, a sturdy yet yielding crust, and a good handle on the grease factor. The pizza could use more sauce, but it was a tasty, interesting sauce nonetheless. One area where Shamrock reigns is the cheese. They use more cheddar, which gives you that true cheeseburger flavor (and bucketloads of grease). But Shamrock gives you pickles as a side. You must add them to your little squares. I rather liked having them all neat and manageable, diced right into the pie. Nothing makes a bacon cheeseburger pizza more authentic than pickles.

The Hermantown Do North, where I picked up my pizza, is a cute little storefront with a few wooden tables for eating in. It would be fun to make your way through the list of specialty pizzas. I remember one nomination last year that proclaimed the chicken Alfredo pizza to be the best in the area. Maybe something for you holiday shoppers to give a whirl this weekend.
